Warning Signs: When to Call Right Away

Eight signs that mean it's time to call — not wait and see.

Trust your body — when in doubt, it is always better to call than to wait.

Vaginal bleeding
Severe headache or blurred vision
Less fetal movement than usual
Regular contractions before 37 weeks
Fever above 38°C (100.4°F)
Sudden swelling in face or hands
Strong, constant abdominal pain
No fetal movement felt for several hours

What to do: Call your midwife or go to the nearest emergency department. Don't wait for it to pass on its own.

This information is educational and general — every pregnancy is different. If in doubt, talk to your midwife.
